The Crew
Principal Investigator
John Palmore Jr, PhD Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering University of Washington Dr. Palmore uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study energy production and utilization. His work focuses on developing CFD techniques for simulating turbulent, multiphase flows undergoing phase change. The goal of this work is to understand how small scale flow processes such as the formation and motion of bubbles and droplets can affect the efficiency of fuel production and utilization. An recent CV is here. |
Current Students
Syed Sulman Ahmad
Syed Sulman Ahmad is a PhD student in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Washington. Currently, his work at UW focuses on the utilization of computational and analytical techniques to mitigate invasive carp species population from Great Lakes through acoustics simulations. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2020. He was awarded a semester exchange program to Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), South Korea in 2018, where he also worked with Prof. Dongho Bae on enhancing the reheating steam temperature of gas turbines. On completion of his bachelor's, he worked as a research assistant in Dr. Syed Asad Ali Zaidi group at NUST with an aim to develop probabilistic forecasting models for wind potential and Perform CFD/FSI modeling for aerodynamics of airfoil. In his free time, Syed has a predilection for traveling to the countryside, going for long walks, and playing cricket.
Yushu Lin
Yushu Lin is a PhD student in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Washington. His work at UW focuses on the utilization of machine learning in the study of spray droplet atomization. He completed his bachelor's degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Shenzhen, China, in 2019. On completion of his bachelor's, he worked as a research assistant in Dr. Minping Wan's research group at SUSTech. He is currently completing a MS in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech.
Cairen Miranda
Cairen Miranda is an PhD student in the Mechanical Engineering Department in Virginia Tech. His work at Virginia Tech focuses on the evolution of spray droplets in turbulent flows. He completed his bachelor's degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal, India, in 2016. On completion of his bachelor's, he joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India, where he worked on simulation and experimental combustion in hypersonic research vehicles.
Cairen enjoys playing soccer, working out, hiking, and listening to music.
Edwin George
Edwin George is an MS student in the Mechanical Engineering Department in Virginia Tech. His work at Virginia Tech focuses on developing a solver for acoustic simulations. He completed his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Mumbai, Mumbai, India, in 2021. As a hobbyist 3D artist, he works on personal CGI and videogame development projects.
Florian Stoll
Florian Stoll is a MS student in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Virginia Tech who joined the CAMPhyRE-group in Fall 2022. He is at VT as part of the double degree program between Virginia Tech and TU Darmstadt. His research focuses on the motion of particles in turbulent flows. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from TU Darmstadt in 2022 and started his MS there afterwards.
